Tuesday, February 10th the "Off Constantly" intramural basketball team faced off against a team that by all known measures of basketball prowess was far superior. The other team, who's name was never actually discovered will be from here on out referred to as simply "the athletes." They were bigger, stronger, faster, and undoubtedly more in shape than Off Constantly. Judging from what I saw across the court in pregame warm ups and from their general level of cavalier cockiness, they looked like they could run the floor and knock down shots. We're we intimated? You bet. But when your team's lone victory in its 4 years of existence came against a team of CYO league alumni freshman, you're more than used to being outmatched- in fact, you come to expect it.
Minutes before tip off I realized that on the opposing team was an old friend, local basketball all star, Tim Cox. So we knew what we were up against. "the athletes" quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead off a series of ugly turnovers, and easy fast break buckets. We knew what they were made of- speed, athleticism, basketball IQ, and most importantly, talent. Traditionally "Off Constantly" has no steady response to any of these things- more often than not we resort to jacking three's and making ill advised passes, but apparently those CYO-league-alumni-freshman gave us something we've never had until now- hope, and the belief that a group of kids that never started a game of high school basketball between them truly can win an intramural basketball game.
Then something happened, that until that point had never happened before, we started playing defense, and stopped making certifiably bad passes. What is this? Where am I? Oh yeah, on the court making a comeback. Harnessing my inner Adam Morrison through my newly acquired and rather dirty mustache, we were on our way back. At half time we were still down by ten, but had slowed the athletes' fast start. I won't bore you with the details of the rest of the game, but it came down to one last possession where one of our "lights out" shooters taking a "lay-up" while tripled team in the paint. Game over. In the end it was The Athletes that beat Off Constantly 39-36.
Off Constantly (now mustache-less) is back in action next Tuesday where they take a team that reportedly sucks, but has a 6'4" fat guy that has "a wicked shot." I say bring it on Fat Guy- be ready.

Oh, I get it, it's like:
"Did you win tonight?"
"Yeah, we beat Off Constantly."
They might have emerged victorious, but in the end the joke is on them.
